The Nose Creek Swim Association (NCSA) had a busy weekend.

Not only did the club host its inaugural event, the John G. Timmermans Memorial Invitational swim meet, Feb. 12-13 at Airdrie’s Genesis Place, but it came away with 12 first-place finishes and top-five placings in almost every discipline.

Seven NCSA swimmers also qualified for provincials.

Nearly 400 competitors from the NCSA, the Tigers Swim Club, the Killarney Swim Club, the Glencoe Gators Swim Club, the Foothills Stingrays Swim Club, the Cascade Swim Club, the Calgary Patriots Swim Club, the University of Calgary Swim Club, the Alberta Marlin Aquatic Club, the Calgary Winter Club and the Strathmore Silversharks swam in more than 50 individual and relay events during the two-day event.

The NCSA’s Reid Glatz and Andrea Gibson were the team’s top performers, as Glatz took home first five times, and second in two others, while Gibson took first four times and second in three others.

“Overall it was a really good meet,” said NCSA coach Alexx Diep. “It was our first time hosting and we were really happy with the turnout and it was great to see kids stepping up and swimming fast.”

Ten-year-old Glatz took first in the boys’ 10 and under 100-metre backstroke in 1:25:65, first in the 50-metre butterfly in 37:21, first in the 100-metre breaststroke in 1:42:77, first in the 50-metre breaststroke in 48:27 and first in the 100-metre butterfly in 1:28:49.

He placed second in the 200-metre freestyle and in the boys’ 11 and under 200-metre freestyle relay, alongside Alexander Pratt, Zach McLeod and Carson Trimble. Pratt won the boys’ 10 and under 200-metre freestyle in 2:46:45, and also finished second in the 50-metre butterfly and 100-metre butterfly and third in the 100-metre breaststroke.

Trimble placed second in the boys’ 11-year-olds 50-metre freestyle and joined Aaron Ahl, Rhys Stephens and Kyle Bevans for a third-place finish in the boys’ 11 and under 200-metre medley relay.

Gibson, 13, took first in the girls’ 13-14 200-metre freestyle in a time of 2:22:99, first in the 50-metre freestyle in 29:52, first in the 50-metre butterfly in 32:56 and first in 100-metre butterfly in 1:14:30. She finished second in the 100-metre backstroke, 100-metre freestyle and in the girls 12 and over 200-metre medley relay, alongside Elaina Smith, Stephanie Churcher and Bryce Rankel.

Smith also place third in the 100-metre butterfly and the 100-metre freestyle.

The NCSA’s other two first place finishers were by 14-year-old Nathaniel Eckstein in the boys’ 13-14 100-metre breaststroke and 50-metre breaststroke, and by 15-year-old Jessica Trimble in the girls’ 15 and over 50-metre backstroke.

Eckstein also placed second in the 200-metre individual medley and, alongside Justin Van Dewark, second in the 200-metre medley relay. Van Dewark, 14, also placed second in the 50-metre freestyle and 100-metre freestyle and third in the 50-metre butterfly and 50-metre backstroke.

Trimble also place third in the 100-metre freestyle, while Taylor Decheif, 16, placed second in that event, as well as second in the 100-metre breaststroke and 400-metre freestyle.

Twelve-year-old Zander Glatz of the NCSA had two second places and one third, while Josh Sorensen placed third in four different events.

“We had nothing but good feedback about the venue at Genesis Place and the staff there,” Diep said. “We got feedback from parents, from swimmers and from coaches, which is worth a lot for us. Everyone was very enthused about the whole setting that we offered. We’re looking forward to hosting more meets there.”
