With Airdrie hosting the 2011 Canada Cup Trampoline and Tumbling Championships this weekend, Corissa Boychuk will be competing on the international stage in her hometown.

“It’s so nice,” said Boychuk. “I can live my everyday life and my friends and family can come and watch. It’s going to be an exciting competition and a huge variety of level and skill.”

The Canada Cup competition is a stepping stone to the Worlds competition, which will be held Nov. 17-20 in Birmingham, England. While Airdrie has previously hosted a Canadian trials competition, this is the first time that city has hosted an international event. It’s providing the competitors with extra incentive.

“It’s definitely added pressure,” Boychuk said. “You want to do well within your country, but there’s also pressure when you’re competing against other countries.”

Boychuk, who competes for the club in the double mini trampoline and individual trampoline events, also said that hosting a tournament of this calibre will be good exposure for both the city and the Airdrie Edge Gymnastics Club.

“It isn’t a sport that’s widely recognized in a hockey city like Airdrie,” she said. “We have an amazing facility that a lot of people walk through in a day. The competition’s going to open people up the City and the sport.”
