The George McDougall Mustangs went undefeated in 2023 and finished in first place among Rockyview high school football teams.

The George McDougall Mustangs are one of the most dominant high school football teams in the province and on Saturday, Oct. 28, they have a chance to reaffirm themselves as the best football team in Rocky View County.

The Mustangs finished the 2023 season as their league's only undefeated team.

On Oct. 6, the then 5-0 Mustangs took on the 5-0 Cochrane Cobras at Ed Eggerer Field.

The Mustangs won that game 24-15, therefore clinching the top spot heading into the playoffs.

“Those games between us and Cochrane are always good,” said Mustangs Head Coach, Chris Glass. “It’s been one heck of a battle [over the years].”

Over their six regular season games, the Mustangs scored 243 points –a league best, and only allowed 43 points on defense –also a league best.

On average, the Mustangs potent offense scores 40.5 points per game and averages just a single touchdown against.

Their closest game of the year was the aforementioned Cochrane game; the Cobras got within single digits of the Mustangs, while no other team was able to score more than eight.

In their first playoff game on Oct. 20 at Ed Eggerer, the Mustangs played host to Springbank (2-3-1). The 20 points Springbank was able to score were the second most allowed by the Mustangs defense all year.

Even for a  team that scores almost six touchdowns a game, Glass knows his team is still far from perfect.

“There’s always things to learn,” he said. “Especially playing teams with a different system or a different philosophy.”

In a list released by Canada Football, George McDougall ranks as the sixth best high school program in the country.

The Mustangs fall just one spot behind the top ranked high school team in Alberta, the Holy Trinity Academy Knights.

The Cochrane Cobras round out that list at number 10.

The Mustangs players have confidence in themselves and their system and rightfully so, said the coach.

A team that scores as much as they do and plays defense as well as they do, have to feel good entering the biggest game of the season, according to Glass.

“We have a lot of confidence [in ourselves],” said Glass.

The Mustangs kickoff the championship game at Ed Eggerer on Oct. 28 at 3 p.m.
