The annual cross-town classic is approaching its 10th anniversary, and it’s still one of the most anticipated games for the George McDougall Mustangs and Bert Church Chargers football clubs. The two teams will play the 8th annual Airdrie Bowl Sept. 24. The all-time record stands at 5-3 for Bert Church.

Going into this year’s contest, both teams are coming off losses in their season opening games. The Mustangs were defeated by the Cochrane Cobras 14-52 and the Chargers dropped a close game to Springbank 7-8. The Chargers won last year’s Airdrie Bowl 17-9.

Brent Legault, the Mustangs’ head coach, is hoping that the team will be able to shake off the early season jitters and bounce back from their loss to the undefeated Cobras. He also knows neither team will take the Airdrie Bowl lightly.

“Playoffs aside, this is the biggest game of the year,” said Legault. “The team is very hungry and very excited. They’re two wins up on us, and we want to win the championships back, but I know Bert Church doesn’t want to see it back in enemy hands. The kids are going to have a blast, though, and that’s the most important part.”

The game will take place at the Genesis Place field at 5 p.m.
