Nine to 14-year-old boys are invited to Genesis Place, May 28, to try a variety of sports at the fourth annual Extreme FX.

The event, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., is sponsored by the City of Airdrie, the Airdrie Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Airdrie and Community Links.

“It gives them exposure to recreational activities in the community as well as activities they might not get to try,” said Stacey Wilkins, Genesis Place facility resource coordinator. “We have some new activities this year that we are excited about.”

In previous years, youth have been able to try gymnastics and tumbling, tennis, hip hop dance, baseball and even Aussie rules football.

This year, Extreme FX is adding lacrosse, wrestling and biathlon to the schedule.

The Calgary Roughnecks National Lacrosse League team will be supervising the lacrosse station, while the Alberta Amateur Wrestling Association will be showing youth the ropes.

Wilkins says the biathlon portion of the event has not been finalized, but participants are expected to be shooting targets either with air rifles or laser rifles.

“The exciting thing about it is they will be exposed to the actual sport, they will get to use some sort of gun in a controlled environment,” said Wilkins.

There are 100 spots open for Extreme FX, which will be split into five groups, each group participating in four sports.

Despite registration not opening up until April 6, Wilkins says she is already hearing from parents inquiring about the program.

“It’s a fun day. They get to come out and try things without having that commitment,” said Wilkins. “We have great volunteers who help and lead activities. I love doing these events.”

The cost for participants is $10, and includes lunch. Earlybird registration is April 4, with open registration beginning on April 6. For more information, visit www.airdrie.ca
