Emmi Petersen was recognized as Special Olympics Airdrie's athlete of the month for June.

During a softball game last week, Emmi Petersen was shocked to learn that she had been named Special Olympics Airdrie's Athlete of the Month.

The 18-year-old athlete, who recently graduated from W.H. Croxford High School, was equal parts surprised and happy after receiving the recognition on June 29.

"I was excited – I'm a sports girl," she said after receiving the award.

According to Special Olympics Airdrie coaches, Petersen was selected for the Athlete of the Month award in June as she was a good listener and followed directions well at practices.

Petersen has been involved with Special Olympics Airdrie since 2017. During the last five years, she has competed for the organization's floor hockey, softball, basketball, swimming, and golf teams.

For Petersen, Special Olympics Airdrie is a family affair, as her younger brother Luke, 15, is also an athlete with the organization.

The two siblings' mother, Chantal, said she wasn't surprised Petersen received the monthly recognition.

"When she puts her mind to it, she's a very good listener," she said. "She understands there's more than just the fun parts of a sport. All aspects have to be looked after in order to be successful."

Petersen said she would encourage other athletes to check out Special Olympics Airdrie if they have not done so already. She said she enjoys the social aspect of the association.
