The Edge Mountaineers had to settle for fourth place at the inaugural World Sport School Championship (WSSC), after dropping a 5-2 decision to the Slovakian U-17 national team in the bronze medal game at Winsport Arena in Calgary, Dec. 31.

Patrick Koys scored twice and Matej Paulovic, Kristian Horvat and Robert Lantosi each had a goal to lead Slovakia, while Cam Amantea had both goals for the Mountaineers.

The Slovakian team, which outshot Edge 38-34, built up a two-goal first period lead, when Koys and Lantosi put shots past Edge goalie Kyle Baumgardner 4:31 apart.

Amantea made it 2-1 on the power play early in the second, with assists by Robinson James and Zach Fowles. But the Edge School for Athletes was unable to capitalize, or gain any momentum, and Koys scored the eventual game-winner with 2:20 left in the middle frame.

Slovakia scored twice more in the first eight minutes of the third to extend its lead to four. Amantea added his second goal of the game, from James and Erik Pedersen, at the 9:57 mark, but that was as close as Edge would get.

Defenceman Mitch Ferguson was named player of the game for the Mountaineers.

Shattuck St. Maryís won the WSSC with a 5-2 win over the Finland U-17 national team.

The Edge School played in a tournament at the Pursuit of Excellence in Kelowna, Jan. 4 to 6, after the Rocky View Weekly went to press. For results, see next weekís newspaper.
