Cowboy Challenge looking for judges

The Canadian Cowboy Challenge (CCC) is looking for judges and will be holding a clinic for anyone interested in becoming certified.

The clinic will be held Sept. 9 to 11 at River’s Edge in Water Valley, Alta.

CCC currently has five certified judges, but is looking for more to avoid spreading them too thin over the numerous events the group holds. Each event requires two sanctioned judges.

“If we can get more judges, it will help the association grow, as it’s very new,” said Danita Phelan, president of the CCC.

At the clinic, participants will be given an overview of the sport, including it rules and how to enforce them.

Guest presenters will also be involved in the clinic to give participants insight into the duties of a judge and give demonstrations of the challenge components.

Judges are also required to familiarize themselves with the courses that the horsemen and horsewomen will face.

“It’s not the judges’ job to build the courses,” said Phelan. “They’re only there to judge, but they do have to walk through the course and ensure that it’s safe.”

Participants do not require previous experience, but should have horsemanship skills.

Phelan added those not interested in becoming a judge are still welcome to attend the clinic. By doing so, they will learn more about the sport, which has recently been introduced to the region.

Applications can be obtained online on at www.canadiancowboychallenge.com or by contacting the association by phone at 403-975-1974 or email at [email protected]
