County athletes win AWG medals

Rocky View county athletes contributed 19 medals to Zone 2ís second place finish at the recent 2012 Alberta Winter Games (AWG) in Spruce Grove.

Rocky View county athletes contributed 19 medals to Zone 2ís second place finish at the recent 2012 Alberta Winter Games (AWG) in Spruce Grove.

The Big Country Zone earned 93 medals, behind only Zone 3 (Calgary) and its 125 medals, at the four-day event, which ran from Feb. 9 to 12.

Allison Simpson and Ayla OíBrien of Chestermere won gold in alpine skiingís female dual slalom. Carleen Cymbal, also of Chestermere, brought home silver with the U-15 female volleyball team.

Cochraneís Callum McNeice and Aidan McKeage, in the 43-kg and 60-kg respectively, both won gold for wrestling. Ryan Portello of Cochrane won gold in age 11 to 13 moguls freestyle skiing.

Andie Boeckman, Kirsten Chamberlin, Rylie Dobson, Kate Hufnagel, Brette Matheson, Abbigail Niewchas, Taylor Sawka and Nicolette Seper, all from Cochrane, helped the female hockey team claim silver.

Cochraneís Sydney Perron took silver in juvenile ladiesí figure skating.

Cochrane snowboarders Noah Maisonneuve, silver in 11-13 male slopestyle and male banked slalom; Landis King, silver in 14-16 male slopestyle; and Isis Horne, bronze in 14-16 female slopestyle and female banked slalom, all contributed to the Zone 2 haul.

Speed skaters Max Halyx and Alexander De Boer, both from Cochrane, earned silver in the 11-12 male individual T2T1, and the 12-15 male relay T2T, respectively.

Evan Proudlock and Katie-May Stockley, both Cochrane wrestlers, took bronze in the male 47-kg, and female 60-kg, respectively.

Langdonís Teagan Borbandy earned silver with the female hockey team.

Bragg Creekís Jordon Pease took bronze in 51-kg wrestling, and Brydie Lemkes, also from Bragg Creek, earned bronze in alpine skiingís female dual slalom.
