Another team, another big victory.

The Cochrane Cobras routed the George McDougall Mustangs 52-14 on Sept. 17. They have now outscored their opponents 123-15 in the first two games of the season.

“We played pretty well,” said Cobras head coach, Rob McNab. “We came in prepared.”

Cochrane dominated the first half of the game, leading 45-0 at halftime. Zane Churchill and Kellan Forrest led the rush for the Cobras, as Churchill had two touchdowns and Forrest had three. Josh Duazo added George McDougall’s only two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter.

“We played very well in the second half,” said Brent Legault, Mustangs head coach. “The first half showed it was the first game of the season. The second half was a better representation of the team we have. We just have to make sure we play four quarters of football and make sure we execute.”

Despite a season-opening 71-1 win over Bow Valley and a dominating win over George McDougall, McNab said the team is looking to improve every week.

“Our goal is to progress every week,” he said. “We’re pretty athletic, but our kids are willing to get better. I thought we did some things better this week. I thought we threw the ball better and were more consistent. Last week, we threw the ball OK, but we put the ball in the end zone this week.”

The Cobras will now travel south for a weekend of American football. The team will play against the junior varsity and varsity teams from a San Francisco high school and take in a San Jose State and New Mexico State game, as well as an Oakland Raiders and New York Jets game.

“The kids are looking forward to it,” McNab said. “It’s fun for the kids to play American football. It’s a different kind of game down there. It’s very physical and it’s very fast, and that’s what we need to see from the team.”

The Cobras return home to play Chestermere on Oct. 1.
