In a rematch of their opening game of the season, Cochrane Cobras defeated the Bow Valley Bobcats 49-6, Oct. 21, to finish the regular season with a perfect 6W-0L record.

Cochrane dominated the play, leading 28-0 after the first half and Spencer Gordon would score the Bobcats’ only touchdown late in the game. Christian Root and Eric Patterson both scored two touchdowns for the Cobras, while Trent Gardiner had a single major.

“We played our usual game,” said Cobras head coach Rob McNab. “We played hard-nosed football and that’s what we pride ourselves on. Our defence pretty much shut them down.”

For Bow Valley coach Scott Allard, the game was about improving upon the single point they scored in the first game against the Cobras.

“It was much better than last time,” said Allard. “We have nothing to be ashamed of and we were happy with how we played. It was a good measuring stick for us. We had a few injuries and some guys in different positions. Some were playing for the first time, so they’re getting used to that.”

While the score may not indicate it, the Cobras also had a few players on the mend, including their top scorer, running back Kellen Forrest. Forrest was injured halfway through Cochrane’s game against the Springbank Phoenix on Oct. 14.

“He’s getting better,” said Cobras head coach. Rob McNab. “It’s a tricky situation. We don’t know the extent of his injury. As of right now, his status is questionable. Whether or not he’s going to be able to play (going forward), we don’t know for sure, but I’m optimistic that he’ll be back.”

With the win against Bow Valley solidifying their perfect season, the Cobras, who have outscored their opponents 317-43 in six games, will now play the Strathmore Spartans in the regional qualifying game.

With Forrest definitely out for the game against Strathmore, McNab said the key will be running the offence without their star player.

“Execution will be key,” he said. “We have kids who are stepping into some unknown positions, but we have to execute our offence without Kellen. Our defence will play their regular game, but our offence really has to execute plays.”

The regional qualifier will be played Nov. 5 in Cochrane. Kickoff is at 12 p.m.
