Charity hockey game raises Christmas spirit in Chestermere

The Chestermere Rhinos recreational hockey team and Chestermere’s emergency services raised $2,000 for charity in a friendly game, Dec. 17.

The Chestermere Rhinos recreational hockey team and Chestermere’s emergency services raised $2,000 for charity in a friendly game, Dec. 17.

A Town fund-matching program could double that amount, and a donation of $1,000 by PricewaterhouseCoopers may bolster the total to $5,000.

The money will be split between the Christmas With Dignity program and the local food bank to help families in need.

Staff Sgt. Glenn Henry said the event was a success despite his team getting “killed” by the Rhinos.

“We appreciated their sportsmanship and fair play,” he said. “But, safe to say our emergency services team went down to defeat.”

“It was very successful for the first effort by this group,” said Patty Sproule, director of community services for the Town. “I was very impressed and it was well received by the fans that were there.”

Following the game, there was a blind auction and patrons bid on mystery gifts.

Another charity game will take place on Jan. 15 at 3 p.m. at the Chestermere Regional Recreation Centre as part of the Winter Festival. Proceeds will go to the local food bank.
