Good goalkeeping is essential during the postseason.

For the Cochrane Cobras varsity boys’ soccer team, when your goalie also adds a goal in the shootout, you know the old adage stands true.

Keeper Travis Chace made two key saves and added the game winner, as the Cobras beat the Bert Church Chargers 4-2 on penalty kicks, following a 2-2 draw, during the Rocky View Sports Association’s semi-final match at Mitford Pond in Cochrane, May 31.

Stephen Shevas, Kellen Forrest and Tomas Assel-Moore also scored in the shootout for Cochrane, while Curtis Contenti and Ian Wellspring marked for the Chargers.

The Cobras moved on to play the George McDougall Mustangs, who beat the Chestermere Lakers 3-2 in the other semi-final (see related story above), in the gold medal game at Airdrie’s Monklands Park, June 2 at 4:30 p.m. (after the City View went to press).

Cochrane won the first meeting between the two teams 2-1 at home on May 17.

The Chargers played the Lakers for bronze, also at Airdrie’s Monklands Park, June 2 at 4:30 p.m. Bert Church won the first matchup, 2-1, on May 17.

The Cobras opened the scoring in the seventh minute, when Coleson Dell chipped a tricky shot past Charger keeper Chris Wellspring. Jake Farris made it 2-0 in the 34th minute, when he put a left-footed shot off the post and in from just outside the 18-yard box.

But Bert Church responded early in the second half, as Contenti completed a furious attack by forward Fraser Hunter.

The Chargers tied the game eight minutes later, when Clayton Hardy beat Chace following a costly turnover by the Cobras.
