Fraser Hunter scored two goals to lead the Bert Church Chargers to a 3-1 bronze medal victory over the Chestermere Lakers June 2.

Hunter scored the eventual game winning goal just before the end of the first half and added the insurance goal in the second. AJ Ross scored the first goal for the Chargers.

Bert Church head coach Barry Anderson commended Hunter for his scoring and leadership throughout the game.

“He’s a Grade 12 veteran, and he showed it. He put the team on his back, scored the go-ahead goal and won the game for us,” said Anderson. “Overall, the boys played really well. We had a lot of possession and we were disciplined.”

A scary moment came just after Chestermere’s goal when Lakers goalie, Robert Rooke, went down in a collision with a Bert Church player.

He stayed down for nearly five minutes before play continued on, but he was replaced by back-up goaltender Samuel Ulmer soon afterwards. Rooke suffered a deep charley horse to his bicep.

The Chargers’ first two goals came within minutes of each other after the goalie switch. Despite allowing all three of Bert Church’s goals, some key saves by Ulmer late in the game kept the Chargers from extending their lead. Travis Green was the lone goal scorer for Chestermere.

“(Ulmer) played great,” said Lakers’ head coach Tanya Evanson. “He can’t be blamed for the reason we lost. Bert Church scored their second goal pretty quickly, and I think everyone was still in shock from the collision.”

Hunter was proud of the game’s end result and was happy with his personal play.

“Getting two goals was great,” Hunter said. “It was a great way to finish off the season and the career.”
