Darrell Belyk has been there and won before.

Now he hopes to do it again.

The Airdrie arm wrestler is about to make his seventh appearance at the World Arm Wrestling Championships, which will run Dec. 6-11 in Mesquite, Nev.

“After the election, there’s been some other things happening, so I haven’t really concentrated on the Worlds,” said Belyk, who finished seventh in the aldermanic race during Airdrie’s October election. “But this week, I’ll have the concentration and the focus will be there.”

Belyk, who qualified in the disabled class during September’s Nationals in Winnipeg, will leave Dec. 4 and will weigh-in alongside the 45-member Canadian team the following day. He will also compete on the first day and hopes to benefit from his experience at six previous World Championships.

“Since I’ve done this before, it’s just a mental focus and you have to picture yourself winning. You know what’s going to happen. Some of the countries are strong and we’ll have to see how we do as Team Canada,” he said.

“Usually, I know how to switch my psyche and concentration on and off. All the training will be behind me and I’ll be two or three moves ahead just in case the opponent stops me.”
