The Bearspaw Glendale Community Associationís (BGCA) second annual golf tournament has secured four major sponsors three months before the first golfer tees off June 25.

The Royal Bank of Canada, Watermark at Bearspaw, Godfrey Morrow Insurance and Lehigh Inland Cement have committed to sponsoring the fundraising initiative.

Along with strong sponsorship, the BGCA is currently working on a contract to have a player with the Manchester United soccer team come to the event.

ìThey are playing right now in Spain, so contract negotiations are tedious when they are playing,î said Jens Lipper, chair of the BGCA. ìI canít talk about who it is exactly, but itís a former superstar, not just any Manchester United player. What it does, it elevates our PR power. Everybody knows Manchester United.î

Lipper is reminding golfers interested in competing in the June tournament to register early, as he feels all 144 spots will be filled by the end of May.

All proceeds will be earmarked for the $10-million multi-purpose sportsplex the association hopes to build next to the Bearspaw School.

Currently the association has $823,000 in funds and is applying for a number of provincial and federal grants.

ìWe are building this for Bearspaw and Rocky View, because currently our community has nothing,î said Lipper.

The facility will have a full-sized ice rink, a fitness studio, multi-purpose spaces and a restaurant. It will be located next to the Bearspaw School.

Lipper hopes development permits will be approved in the next month. The next major step will be drafting a business plan.

ìA month from now, we should be having development permits,î said Lipper. ìIt all depends on the staff at the County. We have all documentation available to them, except the business plan. Itís in our hand in draft from, it should be ready in the next couple weeks.î
