Two juvenile girls’ rinks out of the Airdrie Curling Club will soon have the opportunity to bring home some hardware.

The rinks of Keely Brown and Courtney Missikewitz will both be travelling to Coaldale, March 3-6, for the juvenile girls’ provincial bonspiel, after finishing first and second at the Southern Alberta Curling Association’s regional bonspiel in Brooks, Feb. 13.

Brown’s rink, also including third Taylor McDonald, second Aliy Nash-McLeod and lead Claire Tully, beat the rink of Missikewitz, third Dacy Brown, second Nicolle Aberle and lead Megan Moffat in the A final, with the Missikewitz rink claiming the B final and the second spot for the provincial tournament. It will be the first time competing at such an event for both teams, and Kirk Moffat, president of the Airdrie Curling Club, said all of the members are excited for the opportunity.

“The great part about it for the curling club is the entire representation for the south is out of the Airdrie Curling Club,” he said. “So, of all the curling clubs Red Deer and south, the two teams are coming from here – and that’s pretty neat. It’s a hell of an accomplishment for our junior program. It’s huge. We’d love to see one of them go to nationals for sure. That would be incredible for either of them.”

“It’s nice to have two sets of families representing Airdrie on these two teams,” said Joe Brown, coach of the Brown rink. “The best team will come out of it, but we’re proud of all of the participants.”

Missikewitz’s is coached by Wayne Chyz. Nationals, which are called the Optimists International, due to the inclusion of several of U.S.-based team, will be held in Toronto during the final week of March.
