The Airdrie Mohawks will face a familiar foe when they take to the floor this weekend for the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League's (RMLL) senior C provincial championships.
Airdrie's local men's senior C lacrosse team is playing for RMLL glory against the Edmonton Warriors in a best-of-three final series, with the winner claiming the provincial title.
It's a well-established rivalry and match-up; the Mohawks, who are the five-time defending provincial senior C champion, have contested the Warriors for the RMLL title every season dating back to 2018.
The series gets underway in Edmonton on Friday night, before game two comes to Airdrie on Saturday. Opening face-off for Saturday's game is set for 6 p.m. at the Plainsmen Arena.
While they haven't dominated the league quite as much as in previous seasons, the Mohawks still coasted to a first-place finish in the 2023 regular season by going 12-2 in their 14 games.
Airdrie had a fight on their hands in the first round of the playoffs, however. They beat the Calgary Bears 12-4 in the opening game of the best-of-three series on July 20, but only overcame them 7-3 in the return game a night later.
The Bears also went point-for-point with Airdrie for most of the regular season, only surrendering the top spot by losing the last game of the campaign.
“The bears are a very good team,” said head coach Gareth Barley. “They’re young and came ready to play. We had a balanced season series with them – I think it was 2-2, with us playing them in the last game and winning to take over first spot again.”
