Airdrie Irish secure finals berth against old rival the Jets

The Airdrie Irish will now play the 2022 champion Cold Lake Jets in a rematch of last year's finals on Aug. 19.

In what has become a familiar yet fervent rivalry, the Airdrie Irish obtained a thrilling victory of 42-34 against the Calgary Wolfpack in a exhilarating semifinal encounter at Ed Eggerer Athletic Park this past Saturday.

The game, characterized by many emotions, marked the team's final home match of the season, adding a layer of nostalgia to their triumphant performance.

Head coach Anton Bellot attributed the team's success to their formidable offence. He commended their cohesive teamwork and strategic execution on the field. Bellot remarked that their offence had shone brightly during the recent clash, making it exceedingly challenging for the opposition to contain their momentum. He praised the players for their determination, noting that they left everything on the field, setting a great example of commitment for their fellow teammates.

"Hats off to the players, they played a hell of a game, emptied the tank and they pushed it to the brink," said Bellot.

The victory resonated as a testament to the team's resilience, he said-- a quality they have nurtured over the season through various tough encounters.

Reflecting on the challenging year, Bellot highlighted the team's history of facing adversity head-on.

"We've been in dog fights all year since week one," he said, "and I think over the course of the year you kind of build that toughness piece where you've been here before."

He acknowledged the team's knack for thriving under pressure and shared his belief that their diverse experiences had forged a collective resilience that set them apart.

The victory set the stage for a championship game rematch against a familiar opponent in the Cold Lake Fighter Jets. The Jets defeated the Irish 55-0 to win it all last year.

Bellot acknowledged the formidable challenge that the Jets posed again this year, and stressed the importance of meticulous preparation.

“It just comes down to focus," he stated. "We know what to expect, we know they are going to have adjustments."

While the Fighter Jets have proven to be a fierce adversary, the Irish are armed with a strong determination to reclaim their honour from last year’s defeat, the coach said.

Bellot's confidence in his team is palpable, as he expresses their readiness to embrace the forthcoming challenge.

"They have fantastic athletes but so do we. It's going to come down to who prepares better, preparation is key," he said.

Bellot took a moment to express his gratitude towards the energetic fans who have supported the team throughout the season.

"Since we won't be playing in Airdrie until next year, we thank for the hospitality, the fans and how they continue to embrace us; that’s something that means a lot to our program,” Bellot said.

As the championship game in Cold Lake approaches, anticipation runs high. The Irish will square off against the Jets on Saturday, Aug. 19.
