Airdrie Edge Gymnastics club receives provincial grant

The Airdrie Edge Gymnastics Club was recently selected as one of the province’s recipients of a $1,000 grant to promote year-round activity for youth.

The Sogo Active grant, announced by Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA), ParticipACTION and Coca-Cola Canada last week, is part of a $5 million, five-year national youth active living program that has supported 1,850 community organizations, and more than 25,000 youth ages 13 to 19, across Canada to get involved in some form of physical activity.

“Youth across our province are getting involved, having fun and becoming more active because of the opportunities provided by Sogo Active,” said Lisa Tink, children and youth programs manager with APRA.

“Through the support of Coca-Cola Canada and ParticipACTION over the last three years, we are able to fund programs that encourage and inspire Alberta’s youth to integrate physical activity into their lives.”

Sogo Active has already provided more than $160,000 for local and provincial organizations to motivate youth to be physically active.

Using a “by youth, for youth” approach, the organization works to inspire teens to incorporate physical activity into their day-to-day lives and connect them to local community organizations.

“Through this private/not-for-profit partnership, we are able to inspire and support thousands of teens to increase their physical activity levels to the recommended 60 minutes per day,” said Kelly Murumets, president and CEO of ParticipACTION.

Through Sogo Active, communities can help fight Canada’s inactivity crisis by encouraging youth to get up and get active.
