Carstairs’ skip Myla Plett and her curling teammates have received a prestigious honour to top off a remarkable winning season that saw the Airdrie-coached squad qualify for the world championships in 2024.

The team was named Curling Alberta Team of the Year earlier this month. It was the team’s second straight year winning the award.

The team is comprised of skip Plett, third Alyssa Nedohin, second Chloe Fediuk and lead Allie Iskiw. It is coached by Airdrie's Blair Lenton and David Nedohin.

The team went undefeated to win the U-21 Nationals in Rouyn-Noranda, Que. in April. Before that in March, the team took silver in the U-18 category at the Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island.

The Curling Alberta Team of the Year award goes to a top team based on sportsmanship, dedication, positive leadership qualities, and community involvement, according to the organization’s website.

A panel votes for the winner from a list of nominations. The award is for all age categories.

As well as the team award, Plett is also one of three 2023 Hec Gervais scholarship winners, worth $3,000, and one of six 2023 winners of the “Spirit of Sandra” Schmirler scholarship winners, worth $5,000.

Team Plett is preparing for the World B U-21 in December in Finland. And if top they make the top three, they qualify for U-21 World A, also in Finland.

“We will be practicing in the fall and are doing off-ice fitness training right now,” Plett said.

Asked what makes her team so successful, she told Great West Media, “We all get along so well. Our communication is very strong, and obviously we have amazing coaches. It’s a great package deal.”
