The Airdrie BMX track opened recently and the new season is right around the corner.
Airdrie BMX held its first registration night on April 21 for the 2012 season, which begins May 9, but the club will continue taking registrations throughout the month.
Airdrie BMX president Kevin Kelln is expecting between 140 and 180 members to register this season and test out the redesigned track.
“We took out the middle section of the track and put in a true amateur track design with the hope of creating a pro section on the outside of the track in the fall,” said Kelln.
The club also completed work on a gate that increases the track’s safety and is looking into funding to paint the bleachers and complete the interior of the registration building. Though the outdoor season has yet to start, a few of the club’s riders have already competed in indoor tournaments, including a provincial race that was held in Olds, March 31 to April 1. More than 200 riders competed in the race, which was the first indoor race held in Alberta in six years.
Three Airdrie riders - Tanner Vandhoven, Spencer Rosko and Chase Kelln - competed in an race in Redmond, Ore. last month. Vandhoven finished sixth and Chase finished seventh in the 15x category. In the 15-16 Open category, Vandhoven finished fifth and Chase finished seventh.
“Spencer competed in the 17-18 expert category, and it’s one of the toughest classes, so it was a good experience for him,” said Kelln.
“It’s great to have the kids participate in those races and see what’s up. It’s very tough for Canadian kids to get out of motos, so it was a big accomplishment for them.”
