Marshall Scott is an Airdrie baseball player who is eager to play at the 2023 Alberta Summer Games later this month.

An Airdrie baseball player is prepared to showcase his talents on the mound at this month's Alberta Summer Games.

Fourteen-year-old pitcher Marshall Scott will be representing the city as he makes his debut appearance for the 15U Zone 2 (Big Country) team at the 2023 Alberta Summer Games. Okotoks and Diamond Valley will co-host this year’s games, which are set to take place July 20 to 23.

Growing up watching his older brother play baseball competitively, Scott easily and logically fell in love with the sport.

“I just liked how fun it was to play and my brother played college baseball, so that was really cool to see,” he said.

Scott started playing at the age of seven through Airdrie Little League. He currently plays in the Calgary Babe Ruth League and has been there for the past four years. He is a pitcher for the 14U AAA Longhorns.

Scott highlighted the positive experience he’s had in the Babe Ruth League, citing the positive atmosphere and team culture, and highly competitive nature the division provides.

With open tryouts recently held in Calgary for the upcoming summer games, Scott took the opportunity to show off his skills. He said his coach notified him afterwards that he had been selected for the Zone 2 roster, which encompasses athletes from throughout south-central Alberta.

Having a competitive nature, Scott is thankful he now has the chance to go out and compete at a provincial level of competition later this month.

“I feel very grateful for the opportunity,” Scott added. “Very excited and I just want to go out and compete.”

Scott’s father, Collin Scott, said it is important to support the things his son loves. He added that his son has put a lot of effort and work to get to this point of his baseball development.

Collin said watching both his sons excel at the sport and go on to compete at a high level is a great experience. He said he is proud of Scott and the work he has put in.

“Very proud [that] they work hard at it,” Collin said. “The important part is supporting that he loves it. It’s a passion of his.”

Just like Scott, his older brother also played in the Babe Ruth League, making his way up to the college level, playing for Dakota College at Bottineau in North Dakota.

Collin hopes that his son recognizes how difficult it can be to get to that point, and that he takes the entire experience in stride.
