Five separate collisions occurred on Highway 2 between Calgary and Didsbury on May 5 after heavy snow and rain blanketed the region. No serious injuries were sustained in any of the incidents.

Between 10 and 20 centimetres of snow fell in Rocky View County during a spring blizzard, prompting Environment Canada to issue a travel advisory for areas north of Calgary, May 5.

Members of the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit, Alberta EMS and area fire departments responded to at least five separate collisions on Highway 2 between Calgary and Didsbury.

Although no one was seriously injured, several cars were flipped over in the collisions.

Missing man

The search for a missing man, last seen in the early morning hours of Feb. 7 in Calgary’s Country Hills area, has shifted to an area just west of Beiseker.

Calgary Police Service (CPS) investigators are searching the area, south of Highway 72 between range roads 263 and 265 for Ryan Lane, 24.

Police believe Lane has met with foul play and the Homicide Unit is leading the investigation.

Lane is described as a 5’9” tall Caucasian with brown eyes and brown hair. He is around 150 pounds with a slim build and has a tattoo on his right arm.

On May 13, about 80 Calgary Search and Rescue volunteers were scheduled to join the CPS K-9 Unit, Mounted Patrol Unit, HAWC and the Calgary Fire Department to search the roadways, land and water bodies in the area.

Investigators have identified suspects they believe are involved in the young man’s disappearance. Those suspects have been un-cooperative with police.

Chestermere collision

The fatal Chestermere-area motor-vehicle collision that took place on May 1 has claimed another victim.

A six-year-old boy died May 8 from injuries sustained in the collision at the intersection of Highway 1 and Paradise Road. It happened just after 4 p.m. when a white Toyota car carrying two women and three children, ages five to eight, was struck by a minivan while trying to make a left-hand turn across multiple lanes of traffic.

Another young boy, reported to be eight years old, was pronounced dead at the scene. A girl, who was ejected from the rear seat, was taken to hospital but was released shortly afterwards.

The driver and another adult passenger have been released from hospital as well.

The driver and sole occupant of the minivan was unharmed.

The collision is still under investigation.

Trailer theft

A wooden trailer was stolen sometime in the night between May 3 and 4 from a Langdon residence.

The trailer, made of plywood and sheet metal, is a chariot-style, two-wheel trailer that is 3.5 feet wide, 2.5 feet high and seven feet long with fold down sides. It has no tail lights.

The incident is under investigation.

Damaged vehicle

Around 1:15 a.m. on May 2, Strathmore RCMP responded to a complaint of a damaged vehicle parked in the Strathaven area.

Witnesses heard a car with a loud muffler, followed by a crash. The car drove away, leaving the driver’s side window smashed with a bottle. Nothing was stolen from the vehicle.
