Traffic on Range Road 11 north of Highway 566 was tied up for a number of hours Jan. 20 as RCMP dealt with a single-vehicle rollover involving a gravel truck, according to Airdrie RCMP Constable Jennifer Weedmark.

The driver of the gravel truck was transported to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary via ground ambulance in stable, non life-threatening condition, according to EMS Spokesman Adam Loria.

“One adult male was trapped for some time in the vehicle just due to the significant damage, however our paramedic crews from Airdrie were able to communicate with him and assess him somewhat while he was in the vehicle awaiting extrication,” he said.

Loria said the man was suffering from a number of traumatic and serious injuries and EMS initially requested the assistance of STARS Air Ambulance but ultimately determined he could be transported by ground ambulance.

Motorists were diverted onto Highway 566 to the south and Township Road 264 to the north as emergency crews investigated and cleared the collision scene.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation, according to Weedmark.

Collision

A member of the RCMP was involved in a two-vehicle collision Jan. 20 on Yankee Valley Boulevard at approximately 6:20 a.m., according to Weedmark.

“Two additional members attended the scene and fire and EMS was asked to assist,” she said. “Both drivers were taken to hospital by ambulance but just for precautionary measures. Nobody was seriously injured.”

The RCMP collision reconstructionist attended the scene and Weedmark said an investigation as to the cause of the collision is ongoing. The drivers were the lone occupants of each vehicle. An estimate of the damage to the RCMP vehicle has not yet been released.

Sunglasses theft

A man entered the Airdrie Family Eye Doctors store on Main Street Jan. 13 at approximately 4:30 p.m. and made off with 10 pairs of Oakley and Prada eyeglasses valued at between $2,000 and $2,500, according to Weedmark.

The suspect is described as Caucasian with a thin build. He was wearing a gray hoodie, ball cap and blue jeans. He had been seen in the same store Jan. 9 with a woman. Weedmark said the woman is a person of interest to RCMP.

“She’s associated to the suspect and I’m not sure how involved she is but she was probably aware of the situation and we’d like to speak to her,” she said.

The pair were seen leaving the location Jan. 9 in a black Ford Taurus sedan.

Cigarette theft

Weedmark said a lone male suspect is alleged to have stolen five cartons of cigarettes Jan. 8 from the Fas Gas station on Main Street, grabbing them off the counter after requesting the clerk get them out of the secure display.

“The store clerk had to get the cartons for him so he was interacting with the store clerk,” she said. “(The suspect) looks to be in his late teens, early 20s.”

The theft occurred at approximately 11:45 p.m., according to Weedmark. The clerk was not injured during the incident.

The suspect fled north on Main Street in a dark-coloured Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

The suspect is described as wearing a black coat with a gray stripe across the chest, dark jeans, dark rubber boots and a Toronto Blue Jays baseball cap. He also wore a half balaclava mask under the hat.
