There’s still time to complete your Airdrie census online.

Residents can take part in the annual census, which helps City staff compile accurate data and plan for residents’ needs, online until April 24. Those who do so will help contribute to City coffers.

“It saves a bit of money,” said Kari Kitiuk, assistant City clerk. “We aren’t paying the enumerators and… we aren’t coming to your door and bugging you.”

Just over half of Airdrie households have completed their census, both online and with the help of enumerators who first started going door-to-door on April 24.

The City has conducted its census online for several years and each year the number of digital respondents grows, according to Kitiuk.

Fifty-six per cent of residents responded to last year’s census online. Kitiuk said the city is hoping to best that this year.

“It has consistently gone up by a few per cent every year,” she said. “We always want it to grow, but I think it is amazing.”

Kitiuk said the ease of completing the census online, along with the fact that residents are getting used to the process, may explain the growing trend.

Information from the census will affect decisions regarding road design, location of schools, parks and utilities. Provincial grant money - to the tune of $261 per person - is also meted out according to census results.

The money is used for a number of departments and services including Family and Community Support Services, construction and improvement of roads and municipal policing assistance.
