RCMP Notebook: Three-year-old injured in collision

A three-year-old boy was transported to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary with non life-threatening injuries on Nov.

A three-year-old boy was transported to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary with non life-threatening injuries on Nov. 21 after the vehicle he was riding in, a Ford Fusion, was hit by another vehicle at the intersection of Highway 2A and Range Road 292 by Acme, according to Airdrie RCMP.

“At 3:15 p.m., a unit from Airdrie responded up Highway 2A to Range Road 292 after reports of a collision between two vehicles at that location,” said EMS Spokesman Stuart Brideaux. “The vehicle the boy was riding in was T-boned and then struck in a secondary collision by another vehicle.”

According to RCMP, the driver of a Jeep Patriot SUV, a 20 year old woman, failed to proceed safely after initially stopping at the intersection. She was travelling southbound on Highway 2A and pulled out into the path of a Ford Fusion that was travelling eastbound, causing it to spin and strike a third vehicle, a GMC Yukon.

The woman has been charged with Failing to Proceed Safely after Stopping under the Traffic Safety Act, according to RCMP. Brideaux said she was not injured in the incident. The driver of the GMC Yukon also did not suffer any injuries.

Along with EMS, Airdrie Rural RCMP, Airdrie Traffic Services and Crossfield Fire were called to the scene.

The boy was properly restrained in a backseat car seat at the time, which likely prevented him from receiving more serious injuries, according to Brideaux.

“Children are tricky to assess at times so we just wanted to make sure there were no other injuries or things that were of concern, but he didn’t really display anything beyond a small laceration on his forehead,” he said. “His mom, the only other occupant in the car, a woman in her mid-20s, accompanied her son over to the Children’s Hospital.”

Brideaux said the woman was concerned with staying with her son but also did not appear to have any substantial injuries.

Airdrie RCMP Media Liaison Constable Jason Curtis did not know where the people involved in the incident were from or the age or gender of the driver of the GMC Yukon.

Theft from vehicle

Cochrane RCMP is asking for the public’s help to identify the people responsible for stealing four batteries and 100 litres of diesel fuel from a semi tractor truck.

According to RCMP Spokesman Constable Greg Stannard, the theft occurred sometime between Nov. 15 and Nov. 17. The owner of the truck parked it on Railway Street near the Cochrane Bottle Depot on Nov. 15 and returned on Nov. 17 to discover the truck’s four batteries had been removed and 100 litres of fuel siphoned off.

“There was some video (surveillance footage) and it was reviewed. There’s a car that goes by but it wasn’t recognizable,” Stannard said.

Stannard said the total value of the stolen items is approximately $3,000. He did not know if the truck was damaged during the break-in and was not able to provide the name of the owner of the vehicle.
