Beiseker RCMP, Airdrie RCMP and the Calgary Serious Crimes Branch are investigating an armed home invasion that occurred at a rural residence between Beiseker and Irricana on Dec. 3, according to RCMP Media Spokesperson Corporal Sharon Franks.

Franks said RCMP were called to the residence at 7:45 a.m., however, the home invasion took place sometime overnight.

“The investigation is still continuing to determine what happened between when the actual incident occurred and when they phoned the police,” Franks said.

Franks did not know what time the incident took place or what type of firearm was involved.

Two people who were home at the time of the incident observed two suspects leaving the residence in a black SUV in an unknown direction and provided RCMP with witness statements. According to Franks, no one was injured during the home invasion.

Franks said this does not appear to be a random incident and the two suspects may be known to the home’s residents.

“There’s some sort of familiarity between the suspects and the residents,” Franks said.

Franks said the investigation has not yet determined if drugs were involved.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Beiseker RCMP detachment at (403) 947-3420.

Icy Landing

An ultra-light plane that had just landed on Chestermere Lake at 2:20 p.m. on Dec. 3 came to an abrupt stop when one of its skis dug into a soft spot on the ice, causing the plane to tip and the propeller to hit the ice, according to Chestermere RCMP Staff Sergeant Glenn Henry.

“He was taxiing to the shoreline. While he was going slow, he hit a little piece of ice that was not as thick and his one ski fell through,” Henry said. “He just tipped over and then his single prop in the front touched down on the ice in front of him. In vehicle terms, it was kind of like a fender-bender.”

The pilot, a 67-year-old man from Calgary with more than 25 years experience, was alone in the plane and was not injured, according to Henry.

Henry said the pilot would be repairing the damage to his plane himself and “we expect him to be off and going soon. He had to change a couple of the prop pieces, and I think the bigger thing was one of his skis was a little bit (damaged) and will have to be replaced.”

“We’ll always report these sorts of things (to the Transportation Safety Board,)” Henry said. “It’s deemed an Aviation Reportable Incident. They did not attend and they will not attend.”

No charges are expected to be laid, according to Henry.

If you have any information on any crime, call your local RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)
