Man suffers medical emergency while at the wheel

The lone occupant of a truck involved in a single-vehicle collision on May 14 was pronounced dead on scene, according to EMS Spokesman Adam Loria.

The lone occupant of a truck involved in a single-vehicle collision on May 14 was pronounced dead on scene, according to EMS Spokesman Adam Loria.

“Yesterday evening at about 11:45, paramedics from Airdrie responded to a field adjacent to Highway 566 and Range Road 284,” Loria said.

“There they found quite an extensively damaged pickup truck. An adult male was determined deceased when we arrived, just given the injuries he sustained.”

Airdrie RCMP Media Liaison Constable Jason Curtis said the man suffered a medical emergency while driving.

“It was originally dispatched as a single-vehicle collision with fatality,” he said. “When members arrived on scene there were no other vehicles involved, no passengers and it did appear that the male driver had had a medical emergency while driving.”

“The individual lost consciousness and the vehicle continued traveling a distance before going off the road and colliding with some hay bales.”

The identity of the man is not being released pending notification of next of kin, according to Curtis.

Four injured

A 16-year-old riding in the front passenger seat had to be extricated from the vehicle she was riding in after it was T-boned east of Cochrane on May 11, according to EMS spokesman Stuart Brideaux.

“Monday evening we were called just before 9:45 p.m. for reports of a two-vehicle collision in the intersection of Lochend Road and Township Road 262. It was reported as being a T-bone mechanism collision,” Brideaux said. “The primary impact was on the front passenger side and that’s where we needed to have Rocky View County Fire Services (RVCFS) extricate the 16-year-old passenger.”

The injured female was transported to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary in serious, life-threatening condition, but that was downgraded to serious condition upon arriving at the hospital, according to Brideaux.

The driver of the car, an 18-year-old man, was also taken to Foothills in stable condition.

According to Sergeant Darleen White of the Cochrane RCMP, the 18-year-old ran a stop sign.

“There was a truck travelling southbound on Lochend Road. (The) car did not stop at a stop sign and was T-boned by the truck,” White said.

The two occupants of the truck, a 28-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man, were both transported to Foothills. According to Brideaux, the woman was in serious but stable condition while the man was in stable condition.

The investigation is ongoing, according to White, and statements are still being collected from the four individuals involved in the collision. Charges are pending against the driver of the car pending the outcome of the investigation.

EMS units from Calgary and Cochrane responded to the scene along with Cochrane RCMP and RVCFS, according to Brideaux.

Alcohol Suspected

Alcohol and speeding are being investigated as factors in a two-car collision on May 13 on the service road near Balzac and the weigh scales, according to Curtis.

“At 11:15 p.m., Airdrie Rural RCMP received a call of a two-vehicle collision between a Dodge Neon and a Ford Mustang,” Curtis said. “What we know so far is the Ford Mustang collided with the Dodge Neon. Two occupants of the Neon were injured and trapped in the vehicle.”

Loria said four men were transported to hospital, two from each vehicle.

“It sent four people to hospital. I don’t know who was in each vehicle,” he said. “All four were taken to hospital in stable and non life-threatening condition with minor injuries.”

According to Loria, the four men were in their late 20s to early 30s.

“The 29-year-old male driver of the Ford Mustang attempted to leave. Calgary Police HAWCS Service as well as the RCMP Police Dog Service was requested but not actually required. Airdrie RCMP members ended up locating the male,” Curtis said. “He was arrested and taken to a Calgary area hospital. (Officers) are working on an impaired operation investigation.”

Curtis did not have any information about the identities of any of those involved in the collision.

“It was lucky it turned out the way that it did. I don’t know the extent of the injuries but I do know there were no fatalities,” Curtis said.
