The Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association (GBCTA) is hosting its second annual Tunes for Trails benefit concert, May 5.
This yearís event will take place at the Bragg Creek Centre, located on White Avenue, starting at 7 p.m., and will feature local group Scuzzy and the Woodticks, a dance band that plays a mixture of blues, reggae and rock.
ìIt is a great way to meet people that use the trails and network with others that want to see more trails built and maintained,î said Scott Diehl, event spokesperson and band member.
ìIt is a great excuse to get together and... support the GBCTA.î
Organizers are hoping to earn $15,000 to be put towards trails in the area at this yearís fundraiser. Last year, the event earned $6,000.
The fundraiser will also include a silent auction, local buffalo and elk meat, a weekend cross-country ski getaway and entry fees for a four-day race from Fernie to Canmore.
According to Diehl, the community response has been outstanding, with many local businesses stepping up to make donations to the GBCTA.
Last year, the GBCTA, a non-profit organization dedicated to building public pathways in the region, built about 50 kilometres of multi-use trails suitable for hikers, horseback riders, cross-country skiers and bikers.
The groupís focus is in the West Bragg Creek area, although it has constructed paths within the hamlet as well.
The trails are used by a number of groups from around the region, according to Diehl.
ìThey are getting a lot of use,î said Diehl. ìIt has just taken off. We are getting both winter and summer users.î
Although the GBCTA receives some grant money, it relies on private donations to build and maintain the trails.
Tickets for the event are $25 per person and are available at the Best Little Wordhouse in the West, located in the Bragg Creek mall, or at Mountain Equipment Co-op in Calgary.
