A home in Morningside in Airdrie’s southwest suffered considerable damage in a fire Dec. 26.
According to Deputy Fire Chief Garth Rabel, it appears the fire started in the garage of the residence located at 406 Coopers Drive and quickly spread to the second floor, eventually consuming most of the home.
“The home was a total loss. We started to tear it down,” Rabel said. “Firefighters were able to get to the second floor, do a quick search but conditions deteriorated quickly and crews were forced back onto the street. The conditions were difficult for firefighters – slippery and cold.”
Crews from the Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) and Crossfield Fire Department (CFD) were called to the scene just after 9 a.m.
CFD Fire Chief Ben Niven said his department sent two fire pumps and eight firefighters to assist the AFD.
“We had one (fire pump) that was at the scene and the other one was to provide coverage to the city in case there were any other calls that came in,” he said. “We were there for pretty much the entire duration to provide relief for the (AFD firefighters) and to assist where we could.”
Two adults and three children were able to get out of the home safely and there were no injuries, according to Rabel. Due to the quick action of firefighters, homes on both sides suffered only minimal damage.
At the peak of the fire, there were seven pieces of apparatus and 21 firefighters on scene, according to Rabel.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Rabel said. The monetary value of the loss was not known by press time.
