The Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) responded to a residential fire at a home located at 353 Spring Haven Court on March 5 at around 8:15 p.m.
On arrival, crews found the two occupants of the home had safely made their way outside and onto the street and were evaluated by paramedics at the scene, with no injuries reported.
Smoke was showing through the entire home through the eaves of the roof when firefighters entered. They quickly made their way through the residence in a primary search where they discovered a working fire and thick smoke conditions.
The blaze was quickly extinguished, but smoldering continued through the attic space. The home was ventilated to remove residual smoke and gas.
“We managed to contain the fire to just the one residence and no damage was done to any nearby property,” said AFD Chief Kevin Weinberger. “The damage to the home itself was total, it’s a write-off.”
At press time, the cause of the fire was still unknown and the AFD, along with the Fire Prevention Bureau, is investigating.
“We’ve pulled the electrical panel from the home to see if there was a possible overload somewhere,” said Weinberger.
Damage estimates were not known, as the AFD was still awaiting figures from the insurance company.
Three fire engines and one investigation unit attended the incident with a total of 12 firefighters.
High school vandalized
An estimated $60,000 in damage was done to the new W.H. Croxford High School being built in Chinook Winds after approximately 40 windows were damaged on Feb. 22.
Airdrie RCMP responded to two separate calls in the area, the first at around 2 a.m. after a complaint was received about a front-end loader that was set on fire.
When the construction crews arrived at the school in the morning, a call was made to the RCMP to report the windows being damaged.
“At this time, there isn’t evidence to support that the incidents are related, but we believe it’s likely that they happened in the same evening,” said Cst. Kristine Brousseau, Airdrie RCMP.
The windows were reportedly shot out by a BB gun.
“There were CO2 canisters found at the scene as well as pellets,” said Brousseau.
Police are seeking the assistance of the public in relation to both incidents in identifying the suspect(s).
