After a grass fire burned hundreds of acres and threatened homes yesterday, Rocky View County (RVC) declared a fire advisory, effective December 5.
According to a statement released on the County Facebook page, the advisory represents a moderate risk and will remain in effect as long as the dry and windy conditions continue. All burning and fireworks permits have been suspended and burning of most kinds has been banned, with few exceptions.
Indoor household fireplaces, camp stoves–as long as they’re properly attended, propane and natural gas fire pits and barbecues, charcoal fueled barbecues, and wood pellet grills are the only exceptions to the ban. However, fire permits can still be applied for and burning that the County deems appropriate can still continue, as long as a permit has been issued.
As per the County website, anyone who ignites, fuels, maintains or permits an outdoor fire within the boundaries of RVC will be penalized in a fine of $1,000. Should that fire get out of control and require an emergency response, anyone responsible for the fire can be charged the full cost of the firefighting services.
Depending on whether the dry conditions continue, the County may issue a stricter fire ban. Anyone interested in finding out when or if a fire ban has been lifted, can check at the Alberta Fire Bans website and the County’s website.
