Edmonton’s first baby born in 2014 has a Rocky View County (RVC) connection - one proud grandmother.

Patti Milner – who lives just east of Crossfield – was on hand when her daughter Erin McAdam and her son-in-law Jeff welcomed their first child Kael Hudson, who weighed seven pounds seven ounces at 12:24 a.m.

Kael was born at the Misericordia Community Hospital in Edmonton. The acute care hospital is home to the Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine in west Edmonton.

The McAdam family is from Spruce Grove, Alberta, but Erin grew up in Crossfield, before she moved to attend university in Edmonton.

“She wasn’t due until Jan. 8, (he came) a week early, so that was a bit of a surprise,” Milner said.

“It was a rather long labour (for Erin) – 30 hours – but it all progressed the way it should.”

Mom and baby are recovering well, Milner said.

According to grandma, the two parents – who have been married for four years and who both work with for Parkland County – will be splitting the maternity/paternity time.

When asked if she’ll spoil her second grandchild, Milner didn’t hesitate.

“Absolutely, that’s what grandparents are for,” she said.

Milner was excited to learn that her grandson was one of the first babies born in Edmonton, and was also one of the first with RVC roots.

Kael joins baby Micah Jay Warholik of Airdrie who was born at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary just three minutes after midnight on New Year’s Day.

Warholik is the second child for Airdrie parents Valentene and Cory.

Warholik was also a week early on delivery and weighed seven pounds and 11 ounces.

Edmonton’s second baby of the New Year was born just two minutes later at 12:26 am at the Grey Nuns hospital and is also a boy.
