A 39-year-old Airdrie man is dead after his car was T-boned by another vehicle in the intersection of Simon’s Valley Road and Big Hill Springs Road, just west of Airdrie, Jan. 9.
Airdrie Rural RCMP and Airdrie Rural Traffic Unit responded to the two-vehicle collision, which took place at around 6:30 a.m.
The man, who was driving a blue Ford F-150, was headed south on Simon’s Valley Road when he was broadsided by a silver Jeep Cherokee, headed west on Big Hill Springs Road when the driver of the Jeep failed to stop at a stop sign.
The 39-year-old man was airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance to the Foothills Hospital in Calgary where he died from his injuries. The 25-year-old driver received non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital by ground ambulance.
As of press time, charges are pending and police are investigating. (See related story on page 24).
Theft over $5,000
Police are looking for an unknown culprit or culprits suspected of stealing a five-inch wood chipper from the Airdrie Home Depot, between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m., Jan. 11.
The black and orange Bear Cat chipper, worth $8,000, was stored outdoors. The suspects cut a cable and padlock to gain access to the machine.
Man arrested
Airdrie RCMP arrested a Calgary man, 51, for driving while prohibited, Jan. 11.
The man, who received a court-ordered prohibition in Airdrie Provincial Court just minutes before his arrest, has been charged with driving while disqualified under the Criminal Code.
According to a police report, it is an offence that could lead to jail time if the man is convicted.
The man, whose name has not been released, appeared in court at 9:30 a.m., Jan. 11, in relation to impaired driving charges, laid by the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit (AITU) on Nov. 18, 2011.
During that incident, the RCMP Operational Communications Center received four consecutive 911 calls from various motorists concerned about a truck headed southbound on Highway 2 near the Crossfield overpass. The vehicle was drifting from one lane to another at varying speeds.
Three AITU officers intercepted the truck just south of Airdrie, found open alcohol and arrested the man at the scene. The man’s blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit.
He pled guilty to impaired driving and received a two-year, Canada-wide driving prohibition and surrendered his driver’s licence.
At about 10:20 a.m., the man left the courthouse, got into his vehicle and attempted to drive home. He was intercepted by officers who noticed the accused’s vehicle parked near the courthouse. The man is scheduled to appear in Airdrie Provincial Court on March 5.
Multiple arrests
Two Edmonton men were arrested during a routine traffic stop in Airdrie, Jan. 7.
A member of the AITU stopped a black GMC Sierra on Veterans Blvd., near Highway 2, after observing the driver talking on a cell phone.
After stopping the vehicle, the officer determined the two male passengers, both from Edmonton, were wanted on outstanding warrants.
A 26-year-old man was arrested on a Canada-wide immigration warrant, and has since been transferred to the custody of Canada Border Services.
A 23-year-old man was arrested on a provincial warrant for having outstanding fines.
