Media outlets have reported an 11-year-old Airdronian, Faith Kondusky-Sennett, was one of the victims in the fiery crash that took place on Highway 63 near Fort McMurray, April 27.
The head-on collision, which left seven people dead and two others critically injured, occurred when a northbound truck, carrying three occupants, pulled out to pass another vehicle and then collided with a southbound pick-up truck carrying six occupants.
The impact resulted in a significant fire.
The RCMP reported passing motorists tried to pull Kondusky-Sennett, a student at Airdrie’s Our Lady Queen of Peace School, from the burning vehicles before emergency crews arrived on scene.
The young girl was air-lifted to an Edmonton-area hospital, where she died later that night. Reports confirm Kondusky-Sennett’s father, Dan Sennett, also of Airdrie, also died in the crash.
The third passenger of their vehicle, an unidentified male, also died.
Four people in the southbound truck died, including Courtney Penney, and Shannon, Trena and two-year-old Ben Wheaton.
Three-year-old Timothy Wheaton, 3, and Mark Penney, 28, were the only survivors of the crash.
Fatal Collision
A man died in a head-on collision on Highway 567 just west of Symons Valley Road around 3:40 p.m., May 1.
Airdrie RCMP stated it appears an eastbound car veered into the westbound lanes and collided with a west-bound semi-truck, killing the driver of the car, believed to be a 50-year-old Calgarian, instantly. The car burst into flames, shortly after the collision.
The driver of the semi-truck was uninjured.
Highway 567 was closed for about five hours while RCMP investigated.
