Aces finish indoor season

The Airdrie Aces Athletics Club wrapped up its indoor track season at the Calgary Indoor Track Series’ Dino Indoor Challenge, April 28. Scott Chalupiak placed first in the 13-year-old boys 60-metre, 150-metre and 800-metre races.

The Airdrie Aces Athletics Club wrapped up its indoor track season at the Calgary Indoor Track Series’ Dino Indoor Challenge, April 28.

Scott Chalupiak placed first in the 13-year-old boys 60-metre, 150-metre and 800-metre races. He also won the series gold medal in his age category with 104 total series points.

Sam Rajah won the series gold medal in the 11-year-old girls category with 76 total points. She placed first in the 150-metre race, second in the 60-metre race and third in the 800-metre race. Danielle Tritscher won the series silver medal with 50 points thanks to a first-place finish in the 800-metre race and third-place finishes in the 60-metre and 150-metre events. In the 10 and under category, Jasmine Szucs placed second in the 60-metre race and third in the 150- and 800-metre races, which gave her 55 points and the bronze series medal.

Badminton Zones

Bert Church High School hosted the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association’s (ASAA) 2012 South Central Zones badminton tournament, April 24.

Shannon Cameron and Colton Smith, both from George McDougall High School, won silver and bronze, respectively, in the junior boys’ singles category, while Bert Church’s Ryan Chernuska and Keaton Roe won bronze in junior boys’ doubles.

Airdrie Minor Hockey

It was reported in the April 18 Strathmore Standard that Strathmore Minor Hockey is considering joining forces with minor hockey leagues in Airdrie and Okotoks to create a less competitive house league in order to reduce travel and cost. Greg Wing, general manager of the Airdrie Minor Hockey Association, said in an email that while the association has met once with Strathmore Minor Hockey, “it was an informal meeting and we did not commit to any program changes.”

Rattie racking up points

Airdronian and Portland Winterhawk forward Ty Rattie was named the WHL’s Kal Tire Western Conference Championship Series MVP, April 26. The Winterhawks upset the Tri-City Americans and swept them in four games to advance to the WHL finals against the Edmonton Oil Kings. Rattie recorded six points against the Americans, including a hat-trick in Game 2. He scored his 17th career playoff goal in Game 3, tying the franchise record. Rattie is currently the lead in playoff scoring with 29 points.

Game 1 of the finals was May 3 in Edmonton. The final score of the game was not available at press time.
