Dear editor,

What is the real motivation behind the Keith Wilson speaking tour?

In an article in the Feb. 3 issue of the Western Producer, Dr. David Kohl, a U.S. Finance expert, points out that land is a wise choice for investors. He says that land investment has out-performed the stock market over the last 10 years, so now land has become very attractive, particularly for the long-term investor.

This now has the attention of investment groups and wealth funds.

These interests want to buy land with no strings attached.

Brad Farquhar of Assiniboia Capital Corp., who is quoted in the same Western Producer article, states his firm “buys land and rents it back to farmers.” Is this not pre-Magna Carta days as well?

There are a number of these interests in Rocky View County. They suggest we should not support the Alberta Land Stewardship Act or the Rocky View Growth Management Strategy. But if we don’t, who will control how communities develop?

County councillors, who are elected by their ratepayers, have a tough challenge ahead of them to represent their ratepayers’ interests, especially when Mr. Wilson continues to misrepresent the Alberta Land Stewardship Act.

Harvey Buckley

Past councillor, Rocky View County
