Transparancy should be the new council's goal

Dear editor,

I was 366 votes shy of the winner’s circle. In the immortal words of Don Adams, “Missed it, by ‘that’ much.”

Of course, Darrell Belyk missed it by only seven.

If you’re among the 68.5 per cent of eligible Airdronians who didn’t vote, you don’t want to tell him yours doesn’t matter.

It would have to him. Besides which, claiming such is normally just the lazy man’s excuse for not paying attention to the issues. And there were many.

Needless buses that have a history of jack-knifing on icy roads, a mounting debt load, an understaffed fire hall, overpaid bureaucrats - the list is long.

I’m obviously relieved that there’s a new sheriff in town.

Congratulations, Peter, I think you’ll do a fine job. I’m also glad there are some conservatives – congratulations, Murray and Allan.

The wild card in all this is Ron Chapman. Will he side with the incumbents and support the spending spree or will he be a fiscally prudent conservative?

Time will tell.

The truth is, if aldermen can continue to choose to not have their votes recorded, as is the case today, we may never know.

That is the very antithesis of transparency. Changing the situation will be the litmus test of the new council.

Jeff Willerton, Former candidate for alderman
