Province must spend to maintain roads, healthcare for seniors

Re: “Local MLA’s bill will be rejected: Morton” Oct. 29

Dear editor,

Last week, Airdrie-Chestermere MLA Rob Anderson attempted to introduce Bill 204, the Fiscal Responsibility Amendment Act, which would have limited the increase in provincial spending to the increase in population and inflation.

What a brainless idea and a waste of the Legislature’s time. It was nothing more than ignorant grandstanding.

Alberta’s spending increases do not have anything to do with any increase in the general population, but rather the longevity of population. Surely Mr. Anderson knows that the fastest growing and most expensive segment of our population is older seniors.

In addition, Mr. Anderson is obviously too young to know that most of the excellent infrastructure that he and we take for granted in this province, was built and paid for 30-50 years ago by previous generations. That infrastructure is due for repair and renewal. It seems Mr. Anderson does not want to accept his generation’s responsibility to increase spending for repair and renewal.
