Re: “Councillor wants more info on cheques” Dec. 14

Dear editor,

On Dec. 7, Councillor Margaret Bahcheli proposed that councillors be given more details on expenditures before approving third-party cheques. All I can say is: Good for you, Councillor Bahcheli.

The reason we residents elected a majority of new councillors is that we could never find out the cost of anything. Now, Councillor Bahcheli is making a realistic attempt to remedy a problem that never should have existed. How can council be responsible for overseeing expenditures when they don’t have a means of correlating expenditures to invoices?

Apparently, Business Services Director Robinson objects, as it would add a couple of minutes work to each of the 400 monthly cheques, thereby increasing overall expenditures.

Adding a couple of minutes work to each of the 400 cheques means less than two additional days of work for one person each month. Considering the total value of the 400 cheques, this additional expense comes to peanuts - probably less than coffee. Surely council will bring this matter to a vote very soon - and approve it unanimously.

As I said: Good for you, Ms. Bahcheli. Keep it up.
