Blame for any misunderstanding about taxes rests with former council

Re: “The Disconnect,” Editorial, Oct. 22

Dear editor,

Just to ensure that the record is set straight, none of the candidates floated a 12 per cent tax increase for 2011 as was strongly suggested by some incumbents.

The absolute truth on this matter is that the source of the recommended 12 per cent tax increase is the City’s very own current budget document. On page 34 of the City’s current budget document in plain English it states that the recommended tax increase for 2011 is 12 per cent. This recommendation was from Finance Committee to Council less than a year ago.

Given that three members of council, including the former mayor were on the Finance Committee, you would have thought they would have reduced the recommended tax level then. One would have thought that other members of council would have reviewed this key section of the budget and insisted that the recommended tax increase for 2011 be lowered last fall, rather than waiting for the fallout during the election.
