Re: “Critics argue legislation threatens property rights” Jan. 21.

Dear editor,

The Stelmach Tories have new laws that allow draconian land grabs from Albertans. It is good to see people turning out at meetings around the province and writing letters to protest this threat.

I, and the Alberta NDP, have contested the issue since the Stelmach Tories’ plans first surfaced. The Alberta NDP led the battle against Bills 19, 36, and 50 in the Legislature. I stood in the house and called Bill 19 one of the most ill-advised pieces of legislation the Tories have ever devised. During the Bill 50 debate, I slammed Premier Ed Stelmach for trampling over property owners’ rights. Property rights and government interference are about respect. Ed Stelmach, in his quest to hold on to power and keep big power industry friends happy, forgets that government is to serve each and every Albertan. We must oppose a government that imposes decisions on us that threaten our rights.

The Alberta NDP will continue to fight Tory power and secrecy at every turn.

Brian Mason, Leader, Alberta’s New Democrats
