Tom Cochrane to perform at a charity concert near Balzac

Canadian rock legends Tom Cochrane and Red Rider are coming to Balzac, Aug. 21, as part of a fundraiser to benefit the Arthritis Society.

Canadian rock legends Tom Cochrane and Red Rider are coming to Balzac, Aug. 21, as part of a fundraiser to benefit the Arthritis Society.

Long-time Rocky View residents Cindy and Brian Bushfield are hosting the outdoor event at their farm, located west of Balzac on Range Road 13, between Highway 566 and Big Hill Springs Road.

“This is for a great cause and it is also going to be a great time,” said Cindy Bushfield, who has never seen Cochrane live. “And that is a really great combination.”

Cochrane is donating proceeds from the sale of merchandise to the Arthritis Society.

There will also be a silent auction featuring restaurant gift certificates, unique Australian items, jewellery, electronics, art and a hot air balloon ride. A special section will include items for kids. All proceeds from the silent auction will go to the charity.

Airdrie’s Storm will also perform at the event.

The benefit evening is a celebration of a recent world-record-setting accomplishment made by the Bushfields.

In March, the couple walked Nullarbor Links, the world’s largest golf course, located on the Nullarbor Plains in Australia, to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, which provides medical service to the rural population in Australia.

The course was more than 1,400 kilometres through the Australian outback and took 27 days. The Bushfields were responsible for arranging food and water and camped beside the road. The course is normally traversed by car.

The Bushfields are no strangers to charity work, having been active in several fundraisers, including some for The Alberta Children’s Hospital.

We like to help out in different ways, said Bushfield.

“We went with a charity (for the Cochrane event) that corresponds with what we did in Australia. After the walk, ironically, we found out my husband had to have both knees replaced.”

The concert, which is open to people of all ages, starts at 7 p.m. with the silent auction. Tom Cochrane and Red Rider will take the stage at 9 p.m.

Tickets are $60, and are available at Fox Sports Grill, Music Centre Canada, online at www.nullywalk.com or by calling Bushfield at 403-689-0648.

Donations for the silent auction are welcomed and can be made by calling Bushfield.

People are encouraged to bring a blanket.

No coolers or cameras are allowed.
