Airdrie Stay and Play is now accepting registration for the fall 2010 session.

The program runs on Tuesdays from 9:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. from Sept. 14 to Dec. 14. Registration will begin on Aug. 28 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Iron Horse Park.

According to Linn Delzer, chairperson for Airdrie Stay and Play, the program offers a social program in an atmosphere where children, from babies to five years old, can develop social skills through learning and play, with the comfort of their caregivers for support.

“It is a stepping stone to preschool,” said Delzer.

“They start to understand what a school environment is like with the comfort of their parents being with them. It is about growing together and building bonds with your children.”

Stay and Play has been in operation in Airdrie for 31 years and offers a hired teacher who introduces children to song, dance, crafts and themes each day as well as a snack program. Caregivers are encouraged to participate with their children through activities provided throughout the morning, promoting a comforting interaction that has proven to be very important in the early developmental stages of children.

“It is not just a mom and tot program,” said Delzar.

“We accept stay-at-home dads, grandparents and other caregivers; anyone who cares for a child.”

Stay and Play is also a great social atmosphere for caregivers, providing an opportunity to develop friendships with other parents or caregivers, ideal for families new to Airdrie.

“When I moved to Airdrie in 2004, I had a hard time meeting friends for the first year,” said Delzar.

“When I started with Stay and Play, I realized there were so many other parents that were new to the city. It provides lasting friendships for caregivers. It is a very relaxed atmosphere that is fun.”

Social events are additionally offered outside of Stay and Play classes for caregivers to build on these friendships through activities such as bowling nights, barbecue socials and seminars.

The cost to register for the fall session is $65 for the first child and $35 for each additional child. Babies under six months are free. Stay and Play is held weekly at the Christian Education. Building next to the Airdrie United Church at 212 1st Avenue NE.

Space is limited. For more information, visit www.airdriestayandplay.com.
