St. Patrick's Day celebrated around Airdrie

Airdrie will be awash in green and the “luck of the Irish” March 16 and 17, when businesses and organizations throughout the city host a myriad of events to honour St. Patrick’s Day.
Luck of the Irish
Airdronians have plenty of options in how they wish to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this year, from the annual Shamrock Shimmy to an Irish-themed, 45-minute spin class.

Airdrie will be awash in green and the “luck of the Irish” March 16 and 17, when businesses and organizations throughout the city host a myriad of events to honour St. Patrick’s Day. The Airdrie Food Bank will host its largest annual fundraiser March 16. Known as the Shamrock Shimmy, the event will start at 6 p.m. at the Town and Country Centre. The event will include cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m., followed by an auction, Irish dancing and live entertainment. While the Shamrock Shimmy is always a fun night out, Airdrie Food Bank Events, Marketing and Communications Manager Christine Taylor said the proceeds from the party are important to the food bank’s bottom line. The profit from the 2017 edition was more than $35,000. “This being our largest fundraiser of the year, it really helps us financially keep the food bank running and continue helping out the community,” she said. Tickets are $60 per person, or $400 for a table of eight. According to Taylor, roughly 300 people typically attend. Opposite I concert

Over at Cowboys Taphouse Bar and Grill, British Columbian hip-hop/rock group Opposite I will host a St. Patrick’s Day show March 16 as part of its Broken Canadian Tour. Big Mo Music and Sketch Williams will also perform. Tickets for the adults-only show are $15 if bought in advance or $20 at the door. Doors open at 9 p.m., with the show set to kick off at 9:30 p.m.

Irish spin class

For those looking to get some exercise on St. Patty’s Day – or perhaps sweat out their hangover from the night before – PUSH Cycling Studio is hosting a spin class event March 17 at 12:30 p.m. “We like to keep our riders engaged and have a little fun once in a while, instead of just working super hard all the time,” said PUSH co-owner Tammy Block. “With our special events, we always include a fitness portion – usually a spin – and then we all have a little social afterwards and get to meet some other riders.” The 45-minute spin class will keep with the Irish theme, according to Block – riders are encouraged to wear green, and the best-dressed participant will win a prize. Block added some of the music played during the class will be Irish-inspired. She added, drinks and appetizers will be served following the exercise portion. “We’ll have some drinks that we’ll purchase from Thumbprint [Craft Beer Market],” she said. “We like to support local and celebrate small businesses, as well. “We’ll probably have some green beer and different kinds of appetizers.” To reserve a bike for the adult-only event, visit bit.ly/2VuUIxv
