The doors will be open for all former staff and students of George McDougall High School during a 50th celebration of the school’s opening Dec. 20.
“The school opened back in 1963. Back in those days Airdrie was a village with 400 people,” said Don Leard, a former principal at the high school who started in 1976 and is part of the planning committee for the homecoming.
Over the years, the school evolved with the community, said Leard, adding that it was a junior high school in 1983 for four years when Bert Church High School opened up.
It reverted back to a high school when demand was high enough for two high schools.
“George McDougall is a big part of the (city’s) history,” he added.
The homecoming event will run from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the school. Events will include an alumni basketball game and alumni band performances. Leard said former band students should bring their instruments so they can partake.
“A high school reunion often celebrates a single year, but for this homecoming, it will be for all teachers and students who have been there over the years.”

He said it’s tough to speculate how many people will come but expects it will be in the hundreds. Leard added between the main gym, auxiliary and cafeteria the building could hold up to 1,000 people. The event is free, but organizers are looking for sponsorship to help cover the costs of the event.
