Organizer hopes Terry Fox Run will be bigger, better than ever

A single dream, a world of hope.

A single dream, a world of hope.

It has been 30 years since a young visionary on a mission to help bring an end to the misery caused by cancer was relentlessly pounding the pavement through province after province on his now legendary Marathon of Hope.

Airdrie will celebrate the anniversary of the Terry Fox Run on Sept. 19 at Nose Creek Park with a 1.9-kilometre run and fundraiser.

“The Terry Fox Run supports research for all types of cancer, it is not dedicated to one particular type,” said Vernon Sinnott, organizer of the run.

Sinnott has organized the event for the past two years.

“I became involved because I lost my father and oldest brother to lung cancer and this is a way I can give back,” said Sinnott.

Every year, Canadians run in memory of Terry Fox. The run has been held in cities, towns, hamlets and villages across the country since 1981.

Last year’s run in Airdrie included 100 participants and raised about $500.

Sinnott said he hopes this year’s run is bigger and better than ever.

“We appreciate every dollar that people can donate so come on out and enjoy the day and give to the cause,” he said.

The 1.9-kilometre run will begin at 10 a.m. at Nose Creek Park in front of the ampitheatre. At 1 p.m., following the run, country artist Lori Kole will be performing.

In 1980, Fox’s goal was to receive one dollar from every Canadian. He said, “if you have given one dollar, you are part of the Marathon of Hope.”

Over the past three decades, Terry Fox Runs have raised $500 million for cancer research. Eighty-seven cents of every dollar raised goes directly to cancer research.

Airdrie and area schools also take part in the Terry Fox Run, raising thousands for the cause.

Last year, the cause funded more than $20 million in programs covering a wide range of cancer types.

According to the Terry Fox Foundation, an estimated 171,000 new cancer cases will be diagnosed this year. Those wanting to participate in the Airdrie Terry Fox run can register on site the day of the run, or online at www.terryfox.org.
