Last-minute shoppers can still pick up a special gift to celebrate their mothers, grandmothers or wives at Heart of the Community’s Mother’s Day Market, May 5 at Airdrie’s DayBreak Community Church.

“I try to keep my markets focused around a specific theme, and this one is for Mother’s Day,” said event organizer Tamara Hiltz. “We’re celebrating everything mom.”

The event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will feature a wide variety of local vendors. According to Hiltz, shoppers can expect to see hand-made items like crochet or bath bombs alongside familiar home-based businesses such as Scentsy and Mojo Life. A food truck will also be on-site for the day.

“It’s easy to go to the store, but you won’t always find those unique items,” Hiltz said. “A lot of people don’t even really know where to look for things like that, so having them all in one spot like this is a great opportunity to find out what Airdrie has hidden.”

Heart of the Community offers several markets throughout the year, according to Hiltz. She started the markets nearly two years ago, and has been pleased to see the positive response from Airdrie’s local small businesses.

“It’s just kept growing,” she said. “I think the vendors like the advertising, and I’m one of the most economical prices for a market in Airdrie, so that brings in a lot. And I believe it’s important to shop local – you’re not only buying the things you need, but you’re helping that person or family succeed.”

Hiltz said she’s also excited to provide a special event for Airdrie’s moms – with a free carnation offered to the first 25 mothers and grandmothers through the door to the market.

“Mothers do so much. They’re working 24/7, 365 days a year – and most of the time, without a break,” she said. “I’m a mother myself, so I know how it goes. Often, there’s not enough time for me to even look after myself. It’s important to celebrate the moms in your life, to make sure that she knows that she’s special.”

Heart of the Community will be offering a Father’s Day market June 2, and Hiltz added she is also hoping to organize a back-to-school market later this year.
