A local charity is once again bringing the community together to give back to less fortunate kids.

On Aug. 14, volunteers will assemble and package pairs of shoes in homemade cloth bags so children in need will have a new pair of outdoor and an indoor shoes for school this fall.

“This dream would be only a dream without our volunteers,” said Nancy McPhee, director of Stephen’s Backpacks Society.

The Red Deer Food Bank, the Airdrie Food Bank and five other shelters plus the Piikani and Siksika nations will benefit this year from the community’s hard work.

Last year, the society collected 1,100 pair of shoes and this year, the charity has already exceeded that with 1,500 before the final count. Since the Footprints program began in 2007, the society has collected more than 3,200 pairs of shoes.

“This makes me feel that nothing is impossible,” said McPhee.

“Our family is incredibly blessed to live here. Airdrie is one of the most passionate and giving communities. The communal heartbeat is so strong. It is not just about Stephen’s Backpack, All residents who support their passions define the character and depth of Airdrie.”

McPhee said she is thrilled that the community has come together to ensure many children will not have to be embarrassed about not having proper footwear this fall.

To volunteer or donate shoes visit the home of Stephen’s Backpack Society at 2903 Kingsview Blvd. Unit 204 on Aug. 14 at 10:30 a.m.
